Mental Moment-psychologically proactive

positive_attitude

Last night, I was fortunate to be able to give another lecture at SOLPT I got to talk with a group of people recovering from injury and explain some of the psychology behind injuries. What a highlight it is for me to talk about how an injury is more than physical and that coping with it, is very mental & emotional. People don’t really know this stuff. Sure people understand that pain involves shedding a tear and an occasional four letter word but there is a much larger connection between an injury and what goes on mentally & emotionally. There are … Continued

Mental Moment-PTSD

PTSD

In my practice, PTSD is a growing barrier in particular for elite female athletes who have been in their athletic career for quite some time. Most of them have been carrying PTSD around with them for a long time. Imagine being an elite athlete and dealing with the pressures that already exist in the elites athlete world: pressure to stay at a high level, stress from long hours of training, lack of life balance, traveling, obtaining/keeping sponsorship’s  politics, injuries, financial stress, etc. Now add PTSD to that: fear of getting re-injured, fear of falling, fear of getting hit by a car, … Continued

Mental Moment-tip of the day

mindset

You can have a ‘winning mindset’ in whatever you do. The winning mindset accepts and develops a plan for winning, losing and everything in between. Winning is not as simple as it seems. Losing can spiral into more losing. Living in a very black/white, all/nothing world of perfection makes is extremely challenging to recognize everything in between. Once you can accept that in all aspects of life there is all of this, realize that working harder and longer is not the only element of reaching your goals and are able to develop a mental/emotional plan for getting where you want … Continued

Mental Moment-what do you value

How do you define values? Have you ever thought about what your values are? Are you living in alignment or opposition with your values?  The concept of values is interesting. Generally when I ask clients what their values are they mention kindness, generosity and honesty but are these truly your values? Are there others and are you living in alignment with them? I’ll bet you’ve never really thought about it. Here is how I define values: values are our core essence from which we think, feel, act and respond. Our values are who we are in our life; personally and … Continued

Mental Moment-tennis anyone

Victoria Azarenka

Wow! I had a great time at PTR’s International Symposium. Everyone was so friendly. I met some tremendously wonderful people, got to attend some great presentations and then got to share me.I think my presentation on coming back from a loss or losing streak (thanks Lauren Carpenter of Stickleback Studio) Kicked A*#. The group seemed receptive and there was a lot of chatter generated around it.Besides sharing information the most important thing for me was to be authentic and relatable and I feel I accomplished those goals. I had a great time. Funny story. I had brought my Mac-book  was using … Continued

Mental Moment-core values and other stuff through sports

kids golf

Sports has so many positive impacts on a child’s life  sports helps develop movement, emotions, socialization, intelligence, coping skills and the list goes on. I am particularly interested in supporting girls in sport. I feel that inherently boys are more apt to be involved in sports and its still acceptable for them to participate. Although access can still be challenging for both sexes. Part of my support for girls in sports comes from being in the board of The Playing for Power Project. There are board members are all across the USA. We hold teleconferencing board meetings once a quarter. Part … Continued

Mental Moment-on being authentic

authentic

I gave a talk last Saturday to a group of new half & full marathoners. My colleague Matt Forsman who runs Marathon Matt has been gracious enough to bring me into the fold of his program. It is such a great opportunity for me. What I mean by great opportunity is that I get to reach out to people who may be struggling, not know why and give them some clarity. Gaining clients from these talks are great but for me its secondary. At this talk I invited a woman who wants to do some volunteer work with me in my … Continued

Mental Moment-this is for all the ladies

inner beauty

I am always so saddened by how women see themselves. How you see yourself effects everything in your life: the job you get, the partner you are, the friend you are, the mother you become and the things you do/don’t do with your life. The way you see yourself effects your confidence, motivation and self-esteem in all areas of life. The way you see yourself can impact the way others see you. This dove ad: Dove Real Beauty Sketches really hit home the fact that women do not have a realistic view of who they are. My practice is made up … Continued

Mental Moment-process

goals

Last week I talked about acceptance and intuition. Two important concepts in the process of change. Today I want to talk a little bit about what I think is the third important concept of change: process or lifestyle. Living in the outcome of winning, wanting and perfection leave you void of confidence and success. You do not have control over those things. You pressure yourself to do this or get that but those things are not within your reach. One of my clients had a goal of losing 15 pounds but didn’t really have a plan for losing those 15 … Continued

Mental Moment-intuition

intuition

On Thursday I talked about how I thought the top three things necessary to live a happier, healthier life were acceptance, intuition and process (lifestyle). I spent some time on Thursday talking how important it is to accept yes, no, right, wrong, this or that and everything in between. Today I want to spend a little bit of time talking about intuition. What is intuition? It’s that voice inside our soul, our gut or our heart that intuits what we should do. It’s the authentic self. It’s the part of us that know’s us and know’s where we should be … Continued
