Mental Moment-Communication

In Coaches, Professional & Olympic Athletes

Communication is so important. When you aren’t able to communicate you don’t get our needs met. Why? Because people don’t know what those needs are. If you don’t communicate with people in your life they are left to either make assumptions about what you need  or they act and respond based on their own need to be. For example, a golf client hated that one of his best friends was always using foul language on the golf course. It effected his golf game. I asked my client whether he’d ever said anything about how this foul language was disturbing and disruption and he said he had not. He said that he had never thought about saying anything. We talked about how it effected his game. My client said that he would become stiff and negative. One bad hole led to another bad hole and before he knew it he was pissed off and angry at his friend because of the foul language and because he had just played a really bad round of golf. I told him I could either help him figure out how to let this roll off his back or he could talk to his friend about the foul language. He decided that he would talk to his friend. The next week he came back to see me. He started the session by letting me know that he had a conversation with his friend and his friend did not even realize he was using so much foul language, apologized and promised to keep it to a minimum. As the weeks went on the foul language subsided, my client was less effected and was playing better golf.

This is one of many examples but simple communication can go a long way in helping you get what you need and perform at a higher level. You should certainly choose your battles, but the next time someone is effecting your performance in a negative way ask yourself if it’s worth communicating.
