Mental Moment-What Prompts Change

In Coaches, Professional & Olympic Athletes

There are so many things that prompt change. I think in my relationship with clients topping the list is timing and whether or not my personality meshes with theirs. My free 30 minute consult is key to assessing this. In that consult not only do we get to determine if the timing is right but I get to talk to potential clients about how to determine if our relationship is the right one for them. After 30 minutes how does it feel. Do we jive? Are we the right fit? A lot of the time it is a good fit and proceed. Sometimes we are not a good fit.

A friend was talking to me about how she’s had a great therapist for two and a half years but now that therapist has to move in a different direction so they won’t be able to work together anymore. She was sad and rightfully so. It is hard to find a good therapist. I suggested that the timing might be good. It might be a good time for change. At two and one half years its a good opportunity to find another great therapist with a different way of working and an alternative perspective.

It’s hard to find a good therapist/coach/consultant. When you have one you like its even harder to leave that relationship and think about finding another but at some point it’s important. You can only get so far and learn so much from one person. Relationships become settled, comfortable and (too) safe which makes it hard to get anymore work done in that environment.

Part of growth is knowing how important it is to find the right person. Continued growth and self-awareness is knowing when you’ve outgrown (timing) your therapist/coach/consultant and finding another great one.

Happy end of the week!
