Diff Btwn Racing and Training

In Coaches, Professional & Olympic Athletes

G: hey Michelle, thanks for making me think.
What is the difference, maybe what I expect. In training Of the females I am one of the strongest and some are similar and I don’t feel pressure if I can’t keep up with the guys I thrive on the great training opportunity to have stronger men! Maybe it is others, women and competitiveness that I get nervous about in competition?
I do want to improve myself but at the end of the day I do care how I finish up, since it is a race and I do want to win or close to it!
Not sure if my focus is in the wrong place than, on winning or placing rather than on my performance. I am thinking about me when I race but have to focus on what the competition is doing, how they look tired or not etc.
It is pressure I put on myself, I really may want this too badly and when I don’t have the strength or legs..I get really hard on myself you are right. Why am I so hard on myself…I will think about this. What do I want to prove? Anything or do I just want to be competitive. I just don’t know!
Okay I will think more! Usually what I avoid since I overthink but this is good I think!
I tried to be dumb riding the other day..not think, just be in the moment..it helped!

Dr. Michelle: it sounds like you are headed in a good direction.

You can be competitive and be in the moment. As a matter of fact if you are well trained (mentally & physically) being in the moment and doing what you are trained to do in that moment which includes being able to eye someone who is tired, etc but focusing on what you have to do to move yourself forward (what’s in your control) will actually take you further. It’s one thing to “watch” your competition because they are your competition but it’s another to allow that to define how well you do.

Think about this, what does a “winner” look like? When you see a “winner” what are their attributes? I don’t like using the word winner because I think that everyone is a winner and that it’s individually defined, but use it in your sense of “winner” which I am assuming means #1 and see what you come up with.

How does it feel to be thinking about your training from a mental standpoint? Is it making you see the importance of training mentally?

Happy Friday!

Dr. Michelle
