How Do I Assess What’s Important?

KokcharovSkillHierarchy2015I’ve been doing a lot of work with performance profiling. What does that mean? Performance profiling is a way of profiling the important aspects of your sport, music or life. It helps you to figure out where you are with the key elements so you can figure out how to progress and improve.

The process of performance profiling is something I do with many clients but it’s also something you can do on your own. It’s a good assessment tool because it provides a good sense of what you feel are the most important skills you need to excel and which of those skills you want to enhance to improve performance.

  1. Write down all the important mental elements you feel you need to be successful in your sport.
  2. Write down all the important physical elements you feel you need to be successful in your sport.
  3. Choose the top 5 mental & 5 physical skills. On a sheet of paper, in the rows, write down those 10 key skills you need to excel in your sport.
  4. Across the top of  your paper write 1-10 spacing them out just a little bit. On the scale, 1 means ‘not very’ and 10 means ‘very much’.
  5. Find three different color pencils, pens, crayons, etc.
  6. Go down the list of your 10 key skills. Where are you currently with that skill? Choose a color for where you are currently and put an X.
  7. Go down the list of your 10 key skills. Where do you need to be to excel with each of the skills? Choose a different color for where you want to be and put an X.
  8. The third color is to draw a line between where you currently are and where you want to be to excel in your sport.
  9. Choose 1 mental & 1 physical skill to work on. It’s better to work on developing a couple/few skills at a time rather than all 10.
  10. Think about how you improve a little bit (i.e. a 5 to 6 not a 5 to 10). What are the next steps?

Next week I will talk about how you can use this information to develop SMART goals to help move you towards enhancement of your skills. Goal setting helps you develop a plan.

This week try developing your profile: what skill level are you at and what other skills do you need to accompany it?
