Mental Moment-What Information is Important

In Coaches, Healthy Lifestyles, Professional & Olympic Athletes

shifting-gears book coverI’ve had many clients who’ve said they’ve read performance related books but struggled to really utilize the information particularly in a consistent way. They may pick up a few tidbits but when talking about mental or emotional barriers to performance there seems to be a disconnect between simply learning how to, for example, use imagery and how to use imagery specific to their own personal challenges. I find this to be true when I read books. Books make sense generally but it can difficult to read between the lines and interpret it at a deeper level.

I have two books already published. They are not the books I ‘wanted’ to write. They are both pieces of research I’ve done and are written very academically. Besides these two books, I started writing the book I thought I wanted to write 3-4 times. Each time I get a little bit further but always stop because I am not sure how to get across what will be really helpful for a majority of people. 🙂 I ‘get’ that is a huge task and no wonder I find it a bit daunting. Truth be told I feel like I was put on this earth to do what I am doing: help support people’s mental and emotional growth. I also feel that my helping people is different and not in what I might consider in the more ‘traditional’ sense. In my definition of helping people, it includes really caring about people, who they are as individuals and tailoring our collaborative work together to what is going to be the most useful in order for that person to have the life they want to have. I want my definition of helping people to come across in a book and I’ve been a bit stuck on how to make that happen.

Stuck no more! At the end of March I am writing my book. After a lot of research exploring editors, publishers and writing coaches a woman I trust and respect suggested I take Alicia Dunams Bestseller in a Weekend course. She is a writer and writing coach, was skeptical, took it and said it’s completely doable. I took AD’s 60 minute webinar. I did some research on her, her writing and others who had taken the course and 2 months ago I signed up. For those of you that know me you know I am not short on motivation but I did need to find a good way to approach this task that would take me from start to finish and get me unstuck. 🙂 I plan to have the book finished at the end of the weekend! I figure if I could finish my dissertation in 9 months not being in control of most of the process I could write a 100 page bestseller in a weekend!

Here’s where I need your help. Please share some of your feedback with me so that I can write a book that is going to be really helpful! Here are some questions to get you started but please feel free to share information outside of this that you think my be helpful.

  1. How do you translate reading or training material into substantial, consistent change?
  2. What kind of information do you need?
  3. Do you need follow up support?
  4. Accountability?
  5. More or less information?

I am so excited about writing a book. It’s been a dream of mine for awhile and it’s finally coming to fruition!

Happy start of your week!
