Success is Within Your Reach

photoThis is an exciting week for me! My NEW book From Here to There a simple blueprint for women to achieve peak performance in sports and business launches on Friday, July 4th. I’ve telling EVERYONE about the book and trying to make sure that people buy the paperback on Friday because I am trying to achieve best sellers status.

If you haven’t had a chance to look at my book webpage or to download the 2 FREE chapters of my book it may be because you are thinking what’s the big deal. You may be thinking that there are so many similar self-help books, none of which have been really helpful, why would I want to buy another? Yeah? Sure! I get it and if I thought my book was like every other I wouldn’t even have bothered writing it (I know every writers says the same thing). As a matter of truth, the 1 reason I didn’t write this book sooner is not because I lack motivation (anyone who knows me, knows that’s not true) but because I wanted my book to be different, useable and simple (or as simple as heady stuff gets).

There’s a reason you’ve chosen to receive my blog in your inbox. It may be the great content but I’ll bet its also my authentic, no-nonsense approach and practical tips. Well if these are the reasons you are receiving my blog then you’ll absolutely love my book. My book is written in the same voice as the blogs you receive every week. There are no big words. There’s no psycho-babble. My book is plain and simple and explains how to make it happen (if that’s what you want). Period.

The first chapter (which you can download for FREE) is my life story. It’s not every detail of my life or he said, she said but just enough for you to realize how pretty challenging my life was (not so different from anyone else; everyone has life challenges) and how I got from where I was to where I am. Here’s a glimpse.

Sometimes when I give a presentation, here is how I begin: “My name is Dr. Michelle. I grew up white trash in a small, rural community in upstate New York. Up until the age of 15 I was obese. I grew up in a household where my mother was emotionally and physi-cally abusive. Around the age of 17 my mother kicked me out of the house for being a lesbian. I packed up some be-longings and moved in with a good friend and her family. I quit high school and moved to Louisiana with an alcohol-ic, abusive lesbian that I had only known for one week. A year later I joined the Army. It was a way to escape everything that had been going on in my life. If you’ve ever seen basic training in a movie, real-life basic training is exactly how it’s portrayed. Six months after join-ing the Army, I left the Army. I moved back to upstate New York and worked two jobs to make ends meet. Unbe-knownst to me I was beginning to de-velop anorexia. I didn’t eat solid foods for eight months. I was hospitalized twice for severe anorexia. The second time I was in the hospital for six months.

I tried committing suicide several times. Before letting me out of the hospital the social worker explained that I needed to have a plan before she was going to let me leave. She suggested college. Alt-hough I did get my GED while in Louisi-ana, being a high school dropout college was never even a consideration. The local community college had an associ-ate’s degree in recreation which sound-ed pretty interesting. The social worker helped me to get an apartment, sign up for food stamps, welfare and register for college. This is shortened version of the ‘here’ part of my story.

I went on to gain not only an associate’s degree, but a bachelor’s degree, and a master’s degree in recreation. Around the age of 30 I decided to move to California where I started my second master’s degree in sport psy-chology and shortly thereafter my PhD in clinical psychology. I have a partner of almost 11 years and a thriving elite performance coaching practice. This is the shortened version of the ‘there’ part of my story.

My book contains easy, everyday exercises (it is NOT a workbook) and thoughtful questions that I’ve developed by working with my clients that support thinking toward making change and information I’ve used to make self-change. Along these lines of supporting you to think about making change, if you buy my book I’ve included several special gifts as additional support.

You never know what you are going to get when you choose a practitioner. I’ve had many clients talk about their therapists and how change hadn’t happened for 5, 6, 7, 8 or more years. That is not the case with the collaborative work I do with clients (is it?). I’ve had other clients talk with me about how crazy and eccentric their therapist was. I am authentic, real and always trying to find the right path for each and everyone of my clients (wouldn’t you agree?).

On July 4th the decision to spend $14.99 is completely up to you. As I would say to a client: you have the information, now it’s up to you what you so with it. 🙂

Happy 4th of July!

Dr. Michelle
