Mental Moment-Percieved Bad Rap

In Coaches, Professional & Olympic Athletes

Over the years I’ve heard numerous stories of how sports psychology has not had the impact that athletes, coaches and administrators thought it would. Several of my elite athletes have said they’ve had a sports psychologist come talk to them but that it wasn’t very helpful and it was never suggested that they work with someone on an individual basis. Another colleague had brought someone from the field of sports psychology in to talk to the entire school and was not pleased at the results. These are just a couple of the many stories I’ve heard.

Don’t let your perception get in the way of the value that sports psychology provides. As an elite, high school, professional or any athlete comes to find out at some point, mental training is the key that takes you to the mastery level. If mental training is important to you as an athlete, coach or administrator do your due diligence. Be as clear as you can about what you want. If you are not clear, find someone who will work with you to get clear. Make sure you have the right ‘fit’. Whether you are bringing someone in to do a clinic or looking for a practitioner to work with on an individual basis, interview them. Don’t be taken by someone who looks good on paper.

This is one reason I give one (sometimes more) free consult for athletes, coaches and administrators. I want my relationships to be the right fit for me and I want the fit to be right for you.

If you are struggling to get to the mastery level it’s more than likely mental or emotional. Shoot me an email. I am can help. If I don’t feel like the right person I will help you find someone who is.

Happy start to your week!
