Leadership

In Coaches, Professional & Olympic Athletes

Jim_HarbaughWith the beginning of 2015 and the accompanying new year resolutions, I began thinking about the qualities and characters that make an incredible leader. If you are a San Francisco 49ers fan and followed the season, you understand the pain of a disappointing season and the subsequent replacement of head coach, Jim Harborough. There was a lot of controversy surrounding his job change including the question of whether it was a mutual decision by the organization and the coach, whether he was the reason the season was unsuccessful, etc. If you would have asked any 49er fan two years ago, they would have said that Coach Harborough was the best thing to have happened to San Francisco in a long time. So why the change of heart? How does a person be characterized as a strong leader not only through the successes but also through the disappointments? What aspects of a person make them someone worth following?

As discussed previously, Coach John Wooden created the Pyramid of Success which very eloquently discusses the key aspects that will allow a person to achieve their goals. In agreement with his wisdom, there are a few characteristics of a leader that distinguish them from the rest of the group:

1. Trustworthiness
2. Loyalty
3. Strength
4. Dedication
5. Charisma
6. Knowledge and Skill
7. Personable

What do you think makes a leader? Please leave a comment and let us know.

Happy Saturday!
