Here is one way to gauge whether or not you need to put energy into thinking about a situation: do you have control of/in/over the situation. This is particularly helpful in negative situations that produce anxiety, depression, fear, doubt, etc. because why put energy into a situation that you have little or no control. Thinking about about situations where you have little or no control are taking energy away from everything else in your life. Put the energy where it needs to be by worrying about things that you have some or all control over.
